Intro Biology
Biology is the study of living systems. It includes the study of their structure, function, physiology, growth, origin evolution and inter relationships. There are many specialties and sub-specialties in the biological sciences.
Biology is a part of our life and it is all around us.
While studying biology we can learn about ourselves, our environment and how the inter relationships can change over time. Both nature and human action has an impact on our environment, which in return will affect us sooner or later. Studying biology and biological changes around us can help us with awareness and make informed decisions on how to deal with, for example, diseases and/or environmental issues.
Each organism consist of cells, the smallest living part. A eukaryotic cell, such as one of our cells contains many sub-cellular organelles that each have their own specific function. The nucleus contains genetic information, the ribosomes make proteins, the mitochondria supply the energy the cells needs to function. Meanwhile all kinds of macromolecules move back and forth transporting structures, delivering other molecules to sites where they are needed. Check out the amazing movies made by Biovisions of Harvard University on the Inner workings of the cell and The molecular machinery of life.
